Chapter Sixteen
Detective Griesel
The detectives were just leaving the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rapp, quietly conversing about the new knowledge theyâd gained, when a silver Ford Focus came speeding down the street. The two men looked to each other then back to watch where the vehicle went. They hurriedly made their way to the middle of the street. The Focus pulled into the driveway of Minges and zipped quickly into the awaiting garage. The door was closing even before the tail was all the way over the threshold.
âLetâs go.â Griesel tugged on Desmondâs sleeve.
The two men took off in a run, the older out of breath before the younger. âHow do you want to handle this?â Des called out to his superior.
âLetâs play it cool.â
âThen why are we running?â
Griesel slowed then stopped completely and put his hands on his knees. âI need to work out more.â He huffed a breath in and out. Once he slowed his heart rate, he stood. âWe probably shouldnât have been running. I donât know why I took off like that.â
âDidnât want to take any chances.â
âRookie mistake. If he saw us, he probably went into hiding.â
âWe know heâs home. If heâs hiding then we know heâs guilty.â
Griesel shrugged. âMaybe, maybe not.â The two continued walking at a quick pace, but not a jog. As they approached the home in question, Griesel pointed out the drag marks and the broken plants.
Des took it all in but before he spoke, he looked back to where the body was found earlier that morning. âItâs a bit of a distance from the blood. If he was shot there, wouldnât we see blood? Wouldnât the drag marks be covered in red?â
âI donât think he was shot here. I just think there was a scuffle. He was drug into the street, up the road a bit to keep the heat off of themselves and then shot for good measure. Maybe something more happened once Trevor came to. Peter Minges chased him up the street and once he caught up to him, decided to shoot.â
âMaybe Minges was the one who broke his nose?â
âPossibly. Makes sense.â
âWhat if our vic had something on the guy? Maybe thatâs the motive?â
Two female voices carried through a cool breeze as the men reached the porch of the Minges home. They both turned. âOf course,â Des commented.
âIâm here. You go there.â Griesel wanted to talk to both but if this was their only chance, they would need to split up.
âGot it, boss.â With a nod, Des was off.
Griesel gave a forceful knock on the door in front of him before ringing the bell. He put his ear closer to listen for sounds from inside. No noise came. And no one came to answer the call either. Griesel repeated the knocking and the bell ringing, this time with a yell of the manâs name for good measure. âMr. Minges? I just want to ask you a few more questions. Mr. Minges?â
Loud thuds came from just inside the door that got closer before they trailed off.
